Program Requirements for Mentors

The International Telementor Program staff welcome employees of ITP sponsor companies and organizations to participate as mentors.

As a mentor, your job is to provide guidance, information, instruction, and hope to students. You play a key role as senior team member in working with your student to complete a project. Helping your student develop the skills and foundation to pursue unique interests successfully is the hallmark of this program.

For most students, the Telementoring program is the first opportunity for meaningful communication in an electronic format. Mentors should start slowly and gauge their students’ ability. Mentors should not hesitate to request help from the teacher or ITP staff.

Please make sure you are ready to meet the following program requirements before submitting an application:

  1. Commit to participate for the duration of the project.
  2. Use the ITP message system for all communication with your student. Do not attempt to share your e-mail address, phone numbers or postal address with your student.
  3. Communicate with your student a minimum of 2-3 times per week.
  4. Set clear expectations at the beginning of each week. Outline what you expect to accomplish with the student. Ask your student to do the same.
  5. Contact the teacher immediately if your student is not communicating in a project-focused manner at least twice a week
  6. Contact the teacher and ITP staff immediately if you feel the student or his or her peers are at risk in any way.
  7. Be creative; show your student how to leverage resources at the school and beyond to complete the project.
  8. Hold your student accountable; make sure they understand that the work is important, that your time is valuable, that their time is valuable, and that a successful, completed project is worth their effort.
  9. Notify the teacher and student any time your schedule does not allow you to communicate (vacation, medical leave, job change, business trip without access)
  10. Submit a final survey at the end of each project.
I understand that failure to meet all program requirements will result in termination from the program.

I agree to meet all program requirements and now I'm ready to submit the mentor application.
